Writing a book...who's done it?!

Recently during a "healing" session with my homeopath, we talked about the possibility of me writing about my experiences. How writing about my experiences would help bring additional physical healing to my body; the body remembers illness and trauma on a cellular level. Writing would educate those who don't know about the illness and even more importantly, help those who are going through similar situations and let them know they aren't alone in their struggles.

I am hoping to write about my experience with Molar Pregnancy and how it turned from a "pregnancy" to cancer, and how we dealt with the trauma, loss, surgeries and treatments. I want to share the experience with others in hopes of reaching that ONE person that is going through the same thing; feeling devastated, alone and physically, emotionally and mentally drained. One of the hardest things that we had to deal with was not knowing anything about Molar Pregnancy and Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD), and having very, very limited resources for getting information or support. I want to help support those who are suffering the way I suffered in 2009.

Tutorial Time~ Recycle Sheets into yarn!

I searched. I scoured. I read until my eyes bled! Ok, that might be an over-exaggeration. I just couldn't find a straight forward, easy to follow process for turning my stash of old sheets into fabric yarn. So being a DIY-er, I decided to create my own and share it with all of you nice people!!
Follow these easy step by step instructions to make your own fabric "yarn" by carefully cutting up those old sheets that are just taking up valuable real estate in your linen closet! These drawings were created (by me!!) to assist you with making the correct cuts to give you the longest non-joined piece of fabric yarn possible!

Step One:
Launder your sheets. Very important! Make sure you are using material that is free of stains, this is especially important if the finished product is intended for sale.

Step Two:
Trim the "finished ends" from your sheets. This includes trimming out any elastic if you are using fitted sheets. Make the ends of the material as square as possible (perfectionism with this project is NOT required!!)

Step Three:
Fold your material in half, length-wise. This means take sheet as it would have gone on the bed, take the top of the sheet and fold it toward the bottom.

Step Four:
Here's where the fun begins. Start by setting the fabric on a flat surface with the folded edge facing you. Using sharp scissors or a rotary cutter (make sure you protect your working surface accordingly) cut the fabric into strips starting at your folded edge, stopping 3/4" from the end of the fabric (see fig 1). Continue cutting strips in widths of your preference! Make it as wide or as narrow as you like. Just make sure you stop cutting about 3/4" from the end.

Step Five:
Now unfold your fabric (fig 2). Notice how there is 3/4" left between your cuts and the ends of the fabric.

Take your scissors, and following Fig. 3 below, finish taking the cuts all the way to the end of the fabric in an alternating pattern. This will give you one strip of fabric that will not require any joins. You may find where the fabric "turns the corners" it's a little to square for you. Feel free to round them out a bit. If you don't want to bother, that's okay. Just work the square parts into your project, they'll go un-noticed.

Starting at one end of your new fabric yarn, begin rolling into a ball. This will make storing and working with your yarn much more manageable.

Tips:

For a shabby chic look, try tearing your fabric. It's a little more time consuming and challenging but the end product can be stunning!!
Store your yarn carefully to prevent tangles or soiling. I've heard of people using old ice cream tubs with a nice tidy hole cut into the lid (where you feed the yarn through) to keep it from rolling around the room while you work!
Use your new yarn to create a multitude of items. Can be used for crocheting, knitting, braiding. Try making rugs, trivets, bowls, totes - just about anything you can dream up.
Mix and match colors, textures and fabrics for even more creative pieces.
Have friends and family save their old sheets for you. Hit the yard sales! You can also score sheets at second hand stores like Goodwill, Slavation Army or Value Village. Making your own fabric yarn can be an inexpensive and very eco-conscience way to recycle!
Always make sure that your sheets are FRESHLY laundered. No one wants to work with, buy or receive something that looks, smells or IS dirty!! Yuck!

Night table tales

My sister and I talked about our Soul Spaces last week. You know, a place where you can go, just to be. A place to breathe, heal, reflect and observe.

I consider my bedroom my one of my "soul spaces". I spent a lot of time there healing and recovering from chemo treatments; hours upon hours spent reading and napping while the warm sun streamed in the room. It was instrumental in my quick recovery and positive attitude. Piled high on my night table you’d always find a stack of self-help, law of attraction and spirituality books. Oh, and don’t forget one or two Harry Potter books for good measure!

Add to that collection some healing stones and crystals, reiki aura sprays and oracle cards. All of them neatly {crammed} into my small night tables single drawer (right beside the ear-plugs…but alas, that’s another post!!). My hubby rolls his eyes at me. A lot! He just thinks I’m weird…in a cute sort of way.

I felt the need to clear the soul space.

So this weekend, I tidied up those stacks of books. I carefully stowed them underneath, on the bottom shelf, where they belong. They’re still within easy reach and now granting me an easy view of the clock radio. I really paid attention to everything as I moved and put items where they belonged. It’s nice to get reacquainted with items that you are so used to seeing and being around every day. It’s even nicer to look at things from a new perspective.

After I had cleared the top and gave it a nice dusting, I wanted something fresh and new to go there. Liven it up a little bit. A-ha! Nice little display case that I had gotten as part of a gift basket years ago gets new life breathed into it! It now displays my most prized healing crystals, a beautiful pottery bowl my sister made filled with stones and some of my aromatherapy oils. It’s also a nice tidy place for my oracle cards. A little “soul temple” if you will. Not big enough to be considered a shrine, but just right for my space! Just right for me ~ I love it.

I may be weird, or crazy, or whatever. But I’m me and that’s the way it is.

And an apology. I normally don't "forget" to announce my winners or at least leave a note of some sort!! July was CRAZY busy and I ended up taking some extended holidays, camping then to the cottage. I made a Light Box...so can you!

I prefer to photograph in natural light, but on days like today when it is SO gloomy outside I just can't wait for the sun. I am often impatient and my need for immediate satisfaction means I am itching to get some photos taken - NOW!!! Well, with after reading up on it from a number of sources, I decided to try one on my own. Why not, right?

Here's a short list of materials required for this project:

Cardboard box: the size you require will be dictated by the items you are photographing. Mine is approx 14" x 12" x 12".
Utility knife or scissors
Paper table cloth or tissue paper
Bristol board
Packing or Duct tape
Thin plastic table cloth (optional)
Light source

Step by Step Instructions on how to make your very own CUSTOM light box:

Step One:

Prep your work area, have all of your tools handy. This step will save you time and a whole lot of aggravation!

Step Two:

Remove the top and bottom flap, leaving the two sides intact for light control purposes. Remove the side and top panels carefully, leaving a 1.5" edge all the way around. Be careful!! I scored the cardboard using a straight edge, making it easier to slice through with my utility knife. I have removed the bottom entirely. This way, I can use it over objects such as outdoor plants, etc. Remember to recycle everything you aren't going to be using!

Step Three:

Cut your paper table cloth (or tissue paper) to size. Tape carefully to each of the three open sides. I used a paper table cloth from the dollar store because it's a little more durable than tissue, and still a good transparency. In my house, I'd be afraid that the tissue paper would get torn too easily! As a bonus, you can cut the table cloth in one piece to wrap around all three sides.

Step Four:

This is the tricky part. I covered the inside of the box with a very thin white plastic tablecloth (again from the dollar store). I was finding that it was still a little dark with so much cardboard showing. Carefully trim and either tape or glue onto the inside, making sure to cover your corners. Ed. Note: I wonder if spray painting the inside of the box white first before step 3 would work. If anyone tries this tip, please leave a comment to let us know how it worked out!

Step Five:

Cut strips of Bristol board to fit into your light box. You want it long enough to go up the top on the inside and curve down onto your flat surface. Use as many different colors as you want for this and feel free to change it often!

Step Five: Set up your light source. Here's the great thing about this project. You control the light; the source, how much, how little, positioning - everything!! I picked up a cheap little florescent light fixture and it will be good for now. I have been having to adjust my white balance on the camera, so I would definitely suggest using an incandescent source. As you can see from my samples below, I am still working in the white balance to get a consistent subject color!

If I can do it, so can you!!! Honest. From start to finish, this DIY project took me just over an hour. Some of which was spent taking these photos for samples. I'm happy I invested this short amount of time. Now I don't have to wait for the sun, I can take my photos whenever the mood strikes me! The irony of this post is, the sun IS NOW SHINING!

Monday's are crazy here. My son wants me to play, the house is a mess from the weekend and backyard deck renovations are in full swing. On top of my daily responsibilities, I am one of those "creative" type. A little scatter-brained at times, I always seem to have a project or 6 on the go at any given moment!! There are a lot of things begging for my attention and sometimes I lose track of what I am supposed to be doing. As I write this, I am in the middle of eating breakfast, cleaning my sons room and finishing a love knot scarf. Can't I just do ONE thing at a time????! Sometimes I am all over the place (physically AND mentally) and I need to tell myself to walk away, breathe and re-focus! Ahhhh, there we go! Re-FOCUS!!! It helps...for the most part! So on this crazy Monday, I'll keep my post short and sweet!! And give you a little something to gaze upon and you re-focus!

I {RAN} a Half Marathon

Well, I did it folks!! It's done. Check one off the Bucket List!! Half Marathon....check!
We made a weekend of it, the family and I. We drove to Ottawa on the Friday night (about a 4 1/2 hour drive from where we live). We stayed with our family friends and had a great time. Saturday, we drove into the city and picked up our race kits at the Expo. It was PACKED!! After we picked up our kits, we went to the ByWard Market. Lots of fun browsing around, eating lunch and being entertained by two very athletic buskers!!
My amazing husband, Greg, and my equally amazing little boy Ethan, presented me with a necklace (that I am wearing in all the photos) of a runner with 21K on it! Ethan handed it to me and said "I'm so proud of you Mommy". I said thank you so much, to which he replied "It was all Daddy's idea". So honest and adorable when they are 4!! Fast Forward to RACE DAY!
Heather (my awesome sister and fellow runner) managed to find our place amongst over 10,000 runners (although I have also heard there were close to 30,000 participants but I can't confirm #'s!).

The race begins. We were in the 2nd of two wave starts. We had LOTS of room and never felt crowed out or run over. The sheer energy of the group of runners, the crowd, and the city was incredible!! I want to add here that during my training, the furthest I ran was 16K, in about 2 hours. Thankfully, they had water and gel stations as all races do, as well as the BEST idea ever, a sponge station! We also kept ourselves fueled with a natural energy drink, maple syrup water! Yummy! My personal favorite race day fuel was the HIGH FIVE (see above photo for reference)!!! Honestly, if I were feeling tired, I just ran over and got some high five fuel! The crowd was amazing and kept us pumped and reminded us constantly to remember all of the training we had been through. We were lucky enough to see our families about 10K into the run, the photo above was taken about 20 feet from where we saw them!
I really began to get tired about the 18K mark but pressed on. I was determined NOT to walk if at all possible. As we got closer and closer to the finish line, the crowd grew thicker and the cheers grew louder. "Dig Deep" "Looking Great you guys" "Not far to go!" "Keep it up Ladies"

We crossed the finish line, holding hands (we do that a lot!) at 2hours 28minutes and 09seconds!! It was overwhelming!! It was indescribable! It was the best feeling in the world!
As soon as we crossed the finish line we heard a familiar voice calling us. It was our MOM!! The best surprise EVER! She had driven almost 5 hours to surprise us at the finish line!! Such an incredible woman!
Finishing was euphoric! I have never been over come with so much emotion over RUNNING! Wow. We made our way to the Recovery Area where we stretched, ate oranges and yogurt and drank MORE water! I remember hugging Heather, and crying. Honest to goodness tears of joy!

Would I do it again? If you had've asked me 2 weeks before my run, I would have told you, "No this will be the one and only". But since you are asking me now, "Hell, yeah! Sign me up for next years Half!!" So in closing, I will say this. If you are thinking of taking up running or signing up for a Half Marathon, do your self a favor. DO IT!

It's almost go time!

We'll here we are the final stretch of my half marathon training. Its been a long haul for sure! This training hasn't been easy, but it sure has been fun!!
A week and a half ago, I managed a very "easy" 14K run. I felt like a million bucks, I almost went for another 7...but decided not to over do it. I got home, really had a good stretch, a hot bath and went about my day. By that evening, I could feel it. It felt like a knife was twisting just inside and underneath my knee. Uh-oh!! Time for R.I.C.E. and anti-inflammatories.
Needless to say, I rested that poor knee for a week and a half! It seemed to work, and I continued my training wearing a knee brace for support. Whew!!! Not long now until race day.
I am really hoping that I can get myself back on track. And that I don't injure myself during my Half!!

Marathon Training Day 32

We are making some SERIOUS headway here!!

Recently I had been plagued by horrible shin splints, and after changing my shoes (see my last post) I have had a few good solid runs without terrible pain. I was still having to stop for mini 30 second breaks to "breathe into them" and try to break up some of the bad energy and pain. I have also been doing some stretching and shin specific exercises to help make them stronger. Well it must be working!
Today was my very first uninterrupted run since I began my training. I have been doing intervals up to this point and having to take "shin" breaks has been slowing me down! I ran a full 11.5K without one single break. This is big news for me and feel like I have hit a pivotal point in my training!! I am also very big on a 5 minute warm up and at least 5 - 10 minute cool down + stretching time. Felt really good today, almost like I was just floating along! Incredible!
My cross-training for the past couple of weeks has included: mountain biking, hot yoga, regular yoga and some home exercise DVD's (my fave is the belly dancing one - try it, it's fun!). I am feeling great and my body is loving all of the exercise I have been giving it lately. I am not entirely sure my efforts have resulted in any significant weight loss as of yet. Please read on to see why.
There's only one part of the equation that I am currently falling behind with. Nutrition. I need some serious help with my dietary struggles! I am so intimidated by what's right, what's not, and how to BUY, COOK and SERVE the stuff. If I were rich I would hire myself a personal nutritionist complete with the chef to prepare it and place it before me!! But, I digress!
My wonderful sister, Heather is doing a cleanse right now. I really should be joining her, but {again} I find myself struggling with the whole process of purchasing what's right, getting it home and THEN WHAT!? I seriously get lost with this stuff sometimes!! I have been eating better, for sure, but still...I could be taking this to the next level (and should be).
Hard to believe that one year ago (almost to the day) that I began my chemotherapy treatments. I have come a long way, and am not at all disappointed in how far I have come!
And I ain't finished yet!!!

Marathon Training ~ Day 19

I knew you'd miss me!

Well even though I haven't been keeping on top of my posts, I have been keeping on top of my training. Even with a couple of trips away during march break.Luckily, I went away with my sister, Heather, who is also training. We managed to go out for a few runs and sneak in an extra workout while we were there! It felt great to be on vacation and still maintain the running regime.

Let me take you back a couple of days....Monday's scheduled workout was Stretch and Strength. Fantastic! I'll make use of my recently neglected Hot Yoga membership and take a much needed class. It incorporates both the stretching and added strength that I am looking for. It was a fantastic class. 75 minutes of heated stretching, pose holding, deep breathing and sweating. Actually by the time I left the studio, it was a total of an hour and a half! I was rejuvenated! I am determined to go at least once a week!
I could feel my muscles getting really tight on Monday night. By Tuesday morning, yeowch!! I could hardly get out of bed!! My LEGS were so sore, that in order to walk I had to swing my legs from my hips. Ok, I said to myself, I'm going to make today my rest day. Wednesday wasn't much better, it was supposed to be a cross training day or easy run. Lets just say that on Wednesday, I walked. I walked around the yard. It was ALL I could do. Thursday was an improvement, I managed to stretch the legs out a bit. I met with Heather and we went for a 5k run. Just what I needed!!! I spent a lot of time after the run working on stretching out my hamstrings ~ which needed it badly! So I suppose my point here would be, that Hot Yoga kicks your ass and just be ready for it. It's a fantastic way to de-stress and work out at the same time (I didn't even mention once the REST of my body which is still feeling it a little...chaturanga really works your arms and back...holy cow!!). And yes, I will still be adding it to my weekly work out rotation. Yaaay....Hot Yoga!

Today, well, today officially a rest day, but since I wussed out on Tuesday, I'll make today my 5.5k run. And speaking of running (haven't I been doing that already!??!), I was having real problems with shin splints. I was really over-pronating on my left side and it was becoming a real problem, the pain was keeping me from pushing myself and I was constantly having to stop during a run. NEW SHOES ALERT!!

I decided it was time for some new footwear. The last pair I had were really great but not the right size and just didn't help my running! Well......my new Asics Cumulus 11's are amazing and I could feel the difference after one run! Is it possible to be in love with your shoes? Well, I am!

Marathon Training ~ Day Three!!

Day Three on my half marathon training schedule is either an easy 2m run or some other cross training.

I had the best intentions of doing one of my Tony Horton DVD's for my cross-training session today. What I did instead turned out to be the most intense and invigorating workouts I've had in a long time!
Picture this. It's 11am. It's a nice spring morning, still a little crisp out but not cold enough to keep three kids indoors!! Hey, let's walk to the market and back ~ great idea!! I threw on the backpack for the groceries and strapped three kids into the wagon. It's a 2m walk, there and back. The kids (combined, of course) weigh in at approx. 100 lbs, plus the wagon! Down hill all the way there....which means uphill all the way back (and they are steep!!). I huffed and puffed my way back home lugging a 100 pound wagon full of kiddies and and a backpack full of groceries!!
My glutes were on fire, my lungs were working overtime and my biceps were bulging!! I will, no doubt, be feeling it tomorrow!
I don't know if Tony Horton has ever tried MY workout, he might want to give it a try... ;)

Marathon Training ~ Day 2

Day Two...
Started the day with a 3 mile (4.85 km) run in the sunshine this morning! Today was my first outdoor run in months (it was a long, cold and slippery winter here!). I took the time to map out my route yesterday, and even drove it to see how far it was....exactly 5km!! It was fun, and very challenging to tackle those hills...feeling really good!
So, it just happened that today I was also scheduled for my yearly physical. Perfect. I have an official "start" weight.
Here are my starting stats:
Weight 122.3 pounds
Pant Size: 6
I think that's enough for now, don't you?!! Oh, and P.S. I am NOT weighting myself again until I run my race!!

Half Marathon - Training Day ONE!!

Well, it's time. Finally time to get serious, get down to business and get my butt moving.
Back in November, my sister and I signed up for the Ottawa Marathon, May 30th, 2010 ~ both of us doing the half marathon. As the months flew by from then to now, I convinced myself the my once (maybe twice) a week run could be considered "training". It no doubt has prepared me in many ways, but I highly doubt it could be considered "training" by ANY means!
So here it is. Day One.
This means, I have 12 weeks, which amounts to 84 days, to whip this body of mine into half-marathon shape. Yikes. Seems a little scary but I know I can do it!!
If any of you have been following me over the past year, you'll know what I (and my poor body) have been through. For those of you don't follow me, the synopsis is: lost the baby, had 2 surgeries, diagnosed with GTD (pregnacy related cancer), chemo for 3 months, recovery, and have been given a "clean bill of health". (It sounds so much less tragic when surmised in this manner!!). I have so many reasons to compete in this race. Here are a few:

Health ~ not to be taken for granted, although I often do. I really have a strong desire to feed the body well, take it to new fitness heights and test my abilities as an athlete.
Motivation ~ having said what I have above, I sometimes find it VERY hard to stay motivated and I am hoping that this looming deadline of 12 weeks will keep me on top of any doubts I may have about myself.
Personal goal ~ who wouldn't want to compete in their first EVER race a month after they celebrate their 40th birthday??
Lifestyle ~ I am hoping that this way of life will become habitual and addictive. I really do want to be healthy, strong, capable and fit. For the rest of my life, not for just "right now".
Nutrition ~ I want to eat better (how many times have we ALL said that), and learn how to feed my body so it operates at it's optimum. As a HUGE added bonus, I'm hoping it will rub off on my hubby and son. I want us all to eat better, for all of our sakes!!
Mental Health ~ in my ongoing search for "me" in the Universe, I feel like this could help open doors and take me to a new spiritual level. Not only that, I know that running and overall improved health and fitness will help with so many things, like my ability to cope with stress, mental clarity, improved mood and energy levels. And the list goes on.

Now you know why this is so important to me.
So here is my first entry of many with regards to this "training" that I am embarking on. I searched the internet, magazines and books for a good, easy to follow training "calender". I found a lot of useful, complete and sometimes overwhelming programs. I found one that works for me (I am hoping it does, anyway!) and it's now on the Fridge.
Day ONE: Stretch and Strength. I like this because it incorporates two elements that I want to add to my fitness "addiction". Along with the running, I want to add some muscle tone and remain flexible. Cool!!
Okay....Here we go!

Past Creations ~ Future Aspirations

Each Christmas I dig up the family decorations, old and new. This year I pulled out some hand painted bears that I had painted about 7 years ago. Not to sound pretentious, but I was impressed!! You see, I used to enjoy Folk Art painting. I have quite a few very cool things that I have made in the past. I have taken to crocheting and other projects in the recent past and have retired the paint brushes. I had quite an inventory of paints, but haven’t been able to locate them since the move last year. Hmmm, me-thinks it’s time to do some digging! I really miss painting.

Here are a few items that I put on my tree!

Along with cherishing things from the past, I have also been thinking about what the future holds! With the events of the past year, I have been doing some serious soul searching. I looked back to the days when I was working full time, going through major health issues, raising a small child, trying to manage a household while my husband worked extra hard to help put a roof over our head and food in our tummies. As I mentioned in an earlier post all of this combined with the New Year has given me a whole new perspective. I felt like I wanted to help. I felt compelled to help other women, Mothers, wives, corporate executives, and SAHM’s.

I know what the daily struggle is like. Staying organized and having a plan will help those who need it stay on track and able enjoy the time with their families and friends. So having been inspired by this desire to empower women to enjoy themselves, their lives, their families; I am in the process of opening “Om ~ Organized Mom”. This shop will offer printable pdf lists, trackers and goal sheets each designed with busy women in mind. In the future my hopes are to expand the shop and offer complete home organization packages that I will ship directly to you in a binder. It’s also my desire to write an eBook on Stress Management and Relaxation; Health and Wellness and much more. As soon as I get some items listed I'll let you know! It's here! Finally!!! Actually, I went live with the site just around Christmas, but haven't blogged about it yet. So I really should be saying...It's finally here...my blog about my new website!!
It's been a labour of love with lots of work getting content material written, the online Shopping cart set up and photos organized and uploaded. I used a free website for site building, called Yola.com. It's been SO easy, looks good and did I mention it was FREE!!!? They have lots of free templates to chose from, so you can pick one that's suitable for your needs. See them here!

I used a few tools to get things going. I really had to edit and resize my photos in order to maximize the upload capacity that you get with the free site. It is a bit limited, but I don't think I'll ever reach my max! (never say never though, right?!). I use a program called Webresizer.com. It's fantastic. Not only does it allow me to shrink the size of my photos, the program optimizes them for a sharper, clearer image. There are extra capabilities such as cropping, lighting adjustments and border selection. Well worth looking into if you have the need for this kind of a service.
I was able to add a Shopping tab, which I am extra excited about. Hoping that folks will check it out and use the Shopping cart that is set up through PayPal!! I am still working out some of the kinks but have been having such a great time!

{new Perspective}

The New Year has given me a new perspective. One like never before. I'm sure it has that effect with a lot of people, and I have experienced it on a smaller scale in the past. But this year has been different. I have re-evaluated myself, my goals, my life. I am proud to say that I have made some wonderful discoveries.
As some of you already know, I was diagnosed with cancer little over a year ago. It changed my life. Not only did I lose the baby I had been dreaming of for so long, I had a huge fight on my hands. We managed, somehow, to keep smiling and carry on. Almost a year to the day of diagnosis, I received the "all clear" from my oncologist. I am free from weekly blood work, chemo treatments and doctors visits. It is a true sense of freedom. Elated can only begin to describe the feeling.
So, with this new found freedom, this gift of a healthy body and sound mind, I begin the year. On my journey inward, here are some things that I found out about myself:

I am addicted to self-help books, enlightened reading material and anything written about using the Law of Attraction in your life!
I am strong. My legs are very strong, and I have promised to give them a "run" for their money by signing up for my first race: a half marathon in May.
I turn 40 this year, and am determined to be in the best shape of my life.
I am creative. This has it's pros and cons! I sometimes can't stop the wheels from churning, even at 3 am. I have so many ideas and just not enough hands to create it all!
I have an entrepreneurial spirit. As I begin to believe in myself more and more, I am dreaming of ways to turn my strengths, talents and ideas, into exciting and viable streams of income.
I love my life. Despite the events of the last year (and probably as a result of it all), I am so incredibly happy.
I love my space. We moved into a new home weeks before I got sick last year. I truly believe that this wonderful space, with it's great view of the nearby lake, has helped me to heal faster and keep a positive outlook on all of life's situations.
I enjoy making the most of any situation. In a positive, constructive manner.
I love Hot Yoga. I love everything about it. I love where I practice it, the instructors who share their expertise, guidance and light. I even love the "hurt" the next day. I only wish I could participate more often.
I really miss painting. I used to take folk art painting classes, and have made some fun pieces in the past. Some of those were Christmas Tree ornaments that I pull out every year. This year, I actually said to myself..."hey, these are really great!", and took some photos. I'll put them up in my next post.
I refuse to underestimate myself, my abilities and my talents from this day forward.

I am sure there are more discoveries to uncover, and they will reveal themselves as life unfolds! For now, I am so happy to have come into the New Year with the sense of hope, wonder and opportunity.
My wish for you is to discover your strengths, talents and all of the things that make you happy in life. Make the most of every moment. Starting right now.

It's okay to get excited about Angora!!!

Sorry!! I, like many people, have been severely distracted from my blog posts by a teensie-weensie cultural event we know as Christmas!! We had our last family get-together last night, almost two-months after the inception of the season! Needless-to-say, I have been busy this morning taking down decorations, "un-trimming" the trees and putting everything back to normal...whatever that is!
So, lets get to the reason for this post. Angora. Shortly before Christmas, I received a very big and exceptionally delightful (I giggled when I opened it up) shipment of Angora blend yarn. Lots of gorgeous colors, just ready to get hooked into lovely scarves! I spent a lot of time this season whipping up gifts for teachers, bus drivers and various other recipients, all of whom were delighted with the loveliness that is Angora.
Now that time is a tad more abundant, I will be adding several styles of the angora scarf to my inventory!! I'll be sure to update you when they arrive.
In the meantime...eye candy for the Angora-lover in you!!!

A bit about yourself : First off, I am a mother of two fantastic little girls. They are my reason d’etre as it were. Secondly, I am a maker of things. I’ve been making things since I was really little, from refashioning clothes to making paper to painting t-shirts I’ve always got my hands in something. I know, every artsy person says that right – but why fight it?

What made you start your business: I saw something in my friend’s store that I thought I could make, so I went home and tried it. Several prototypes later I decided I’d make more money selling them on my own. Who knew how much work that would be, but I love being in control of my own shop. I love the direct contact with my customers, and knowing that each of my creations is going out to be loved by someone else that I’ve often never met before.

A bit about yourself

I am a wife, mother, school bus driver and avid crafter. We live outside a small town in southern Manitoba, and have been crafting/painting for about 14 years now. My husband, Brad, and I have been married for almost 21 years and have two sons - Luke (19) and Logan (17). We love to go quadding (riding ATV's) as a family, hiking, trying new foods, meeting new people etc.

I started crafting about 15 years ago. At the time I was a stay-at-home mom with 2 small children. One day I saw an ad in the local paper for a beginner folkart painting class. My husband suggested that I go, as a way to get out of the house one evening a week and talk to other adults. So I joined. I think he's sorry now. LOL After attending the class I was hooked and haven't stopped painting since. Did many small craft shows at the beginning, and have done a few larger ones lately. It's a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. I just keep telling my husband that crafting is my therapy and it's cheaper than a psychiatrist.
Some of my inspiration for my crafts comes from other crafters. But my grandma inspires me the most. She lost her eyesight slowly about 35 years ago, but it didn't slow her down. Grandma tried to teach me to knit when I was younger, it's just not my thing. Couldn't manage to even knit a scarf straight. She is now 93.5 years old (1/2 years count at that age), and still knits everyday, making scarves, mittens and slippers for the great-grandchildren. I hope I can still craft when I'm 93!

What made you start your business

My craft room was getting to full of things I was making, so decided to try selling them. Now I'm hooked! LOL.

What you plan to accomplish with your business

My business is not supposed to ever be full time. For me it's more about the fun I have making the items, looking through new craft books/magazines, and trying new and fun crafts.

Georgina Studio Tour - a fun and successful show!

What an experience. I was so happy to have participated in this years Georgina Studio Tour. For those of you who aren't familiar with Studio Tours, they are a self guided (and well mapped) driving tour of the areas various studios. I held my show out of my rec room. It was an entirely new experience for me, I haven't really been involved in many "shows" or "sales" so I really wasn't sure what to expect.

I spent a lot of time in the weeks leading up to the show preparing stock, getting signs and trying to visualize my set up. I shopped for packaging supplies, goodies for the sweet table, and of course YARN!!! When I should have been cleaning up my house, I was crocheting!! I was really worried that I wouldn't have enough stock! My hubby and I were up until midnight getting everything set up, he was very helpful and had some really amazing display ideas!

Thankfully, I had some amazing helpers! My wonderful Mom, Nora, really stepped up and made a stressful time, exciting and fun!! She made the BEST date squares on the planet for the sweet table. I had my share, that's for sure!

We opened the doors at 10am and waited patiently for the crowds to roll in. We started getting worried when at 10:30 we still hadn't had any guests. Thankfully, we after that we had a steady stream of folks from all over. We had visitors from Windsor, Bradford, Brampton, and Toronto. Not just locals, but people from around the province!

It was really amazing talking to everyone. The feedback on my work and displays were all positive. I think I was almost as excited to hand out my card as I was to make a sale. My Mom and I were so busy on Saturday that we forgot to eat lunch (thank GOD for the date squares)! We had such a great time!

Sunday was entirely different! It was my sisters turn to help out! Heather was so much fun to have around and has always been my biggest cheerleader! It was pretty quite for the first few hours, then pretty steady (but not crazy) until about 3 that afternoon. The funny thing is, despite being a "slower" day, I had far more sales on Sunday."My Sister, Heather, modeling her new hat and one of my scarves!"

My biggest sellers were my scarves followed very closely by the hats and pendants! Surprisingly I didn't sell any of my baby blankets, I think it just wasn't the target market!

Overall, my sales exceeded my expectations, even if I wasn't sure what I to expect!!! I am already excited to join in the fun again next year!

Recently I have been taking part in an Etsy forum thread: Facebook Fan Drive. We go through the posts and "fan" as many FanPages as possible! I have been a busy little bee lately! I have an upcoming Studio Tour that I am getting ready for... see the Georgina Studio Tour site for more information. So my efforts have really been focused on creating some really nice items to display and sell. I have been mostly concentrating on scarves and hats (especially since we know that fall is around the corner!) and have started on a couple of baby blankets.

Here is a small sample of what I have been up to these past few weeks!! I haven't had the chance to get a lot of them up in the shop, but will be making it a priority over the next few days! Check out my scarf and neckwear section of my Etsy shop for even more fabulous finds!

Busy in my garden

Once I returned from summer holidays in the Muskokas of Central Ontario, I decided it was time to get to the garden! (A little late, I know!). After all, I had just received my Fairy Door from Nothin' But Wood. Oh, I had it all planned out! A rocky pathway, moss "gardens" and some small ferns. I got right to it! It came out exactly how I had imagined!! Whimsical, unique and so much fun!!
Nothin' But Wood hand crafts wonderful, whimsical doors and accessories for 'wee garden folk'. He creates and ships from Conception Bay, Newfoundland, on Canada's spectacular East Coast. Please check out Kerry's shop, you won't be disappointed!

On the road to recovery ... GTD / Molar Pregnancy Update

Wow...time has flown by. I can't believe it's been almost 8 months since my diagnosis.
From what I remember, my last post on this subject was just before I went in for my PICC line. I won't sugar coat it, my experience with having the PICC put in was horrible. Normally this is a ten minute procedure. I was on the table for 30 minutes (with only local numbing of the arm), covered in blankets to keep me "protected" from the xray machine they used to guide the line through the veins. The doctor, who I am sure had done this procedure hundreds of times, had a hard time getting the guide into my tiny vein, and once that was in, he had an even harder time fishing it up over my shoulder. After about ten minutes and using quite a bit of force, he did it. Hopefully, almost done, I thought. Well, he had a hard time feeding it into the right vein in my chest, I could actually feel it moving around in different veins in my chest. A truly strange and disturbing sensation!! Finally, after 30 minutes and a hundred apologies from the doctor, we were done! My arm was covered in blood and the insertion site was a mess...lots of bruising. They cleaned me up and put on a dressing. My arm, shoulder and chest were throbbing. I met my husband, Greg, in the waiting area. He could tell right away that things hadn't gone well, he said I was white as a sheet. We held hands the whole way home and cried. When was all of this going to end, I kept thinking.
I did everything I was supposed to with regards to care of my PICC line. I made sure I kept it dry, had the dressings changed and line flushed once a week (which meant a one hour drive each way to the hospital every week). I noticed during the second week that my elbow was starting to swell and feel a little hot and itchy. I mentioned it to my PICC nurse who immediately sent me up for ultrasounds on my arm. More bad news, I had a blood clot in my shoulder where the PICC line was inserted, due to the trauma. I started on daily self-administered Fragmin (blood thinner) injections that afternoon, and continued them for a total of 6 weeks.
I want to let anyone know who may be getting a PICC line put in, not to panic. I was told that my experience was very rare, and that normally this procedure goes off without a hitch.
I finished my chemotherapy on June 10th and had the PICC removed the same day (we could see the TINY clot clinging to the line). It was freedom!!
It has taken me a long time, but I am finally starting to feel like I have my strength back. I have been trying my best to look after ME, eating better, taking my vitamins and greens and by exercising every day. The only two visible signs of my experience are the hair thinning (which is slowly starting to grow in) and the chemo burn on my left lower arm (which is permanent). Emotionally, I think I have done pretty well. I have come to terms with the fact that we won't be having any more kids, which was probably the hardest decision we've ever had to make. Actually, our would be due date recently came and went and I (very surprisingly) didn't notice. I think that must be a sign that I am moving forward and making the best of what I already have...a loving husband, a perfect son and the unwavering support and love of my family and friends.
And that's what makes life so amazing!!

A cloth that is eco-friendly and super cool. Shocking, but true!

There is nothing as satisfying (well, okay, almost nothing) as selling a handful of reusable, eco-friendly multi-purpose, super cool cotton cloths. They are one of my favorite things to whip up, and they serve such a great purpose. I only use Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, which is "responsibly" grown and processed. It's soft and absorbent, and ultra easy care.
There are so many things you can use these for, they truly are multi-functional.

I have designed these cloths with lots of texture and that makes them perfect as face or wash cloths. They scrub gently to remove dead skin, providing gentle exfoliation. To boost their scrubalicious powers, use your favorite face scrub or body sugar. Roll them up and tuck them in a basket in the guest room, very impressive!!
In the kitchen, they are a workhorse! Wipe up dirty faces (I have a 3 year old, so there's lots of those), scrub your dishes, clean your counters, *repeat*! Again the texture and durability of the cotton will get the job done. I have used mine with regular dish soap and natural cleaning products, and they hold up to lots of abuse. Around the house they can also be used for general cleaning and dusting.
In a pinch, I have also used them as a hot pad or trivet, to protect my harvest table and they have also been used to pull a tray full of cookies out of the oven. What can't these babies do?!
When you are done with your cloth, be sure to rinse them thoroughly and allow to dry between uses. When your cloth needs a cleaning itself, toss in the wash with mild detergent (it can go in the dryer too, on the lowest heat setting). Soon you'll have a fresh new cloth, ready to do all of your dirty work!

I recently sold two framed photographs to a local business. He is using them as a Silent Auction donation for one of his customers. Well it didn't take me long! I finished this dress within 24 hours of starting...I think that's a new record for me! I did a little bit of modification from the original pattern and added a side tie to create a small gather and another daisy to adorn it. Happy Birthday, my little Mouse!!

I am pretty happy with the finished product and will definitely be trying more garments in the future! I am so happy to have a niece to make this stuff for - I enjoyed making this so much!
Once I have gotten a little more practice under my belt, perhaps I'll sell some of these in my shop.
In the mean time I have added a couple of new baby blankets to my shop stock! I am gearing up for participating in the Georgina Studio Tour in the fall...so my hands will be busy over the summer! Daisy Yoke Dress

I am trying something new! I have never made a "garment" before, generally sticking to less complicated and free form items.

I have never been one to read patterns very well, especially when they are complicated!! But I couldn't resist this time. I found a really cute summer dress that I am hoping to surprise my sweet niece with on her birthday! I have been working feverishly for the past day and have accomplished a lot so far.
Here's a peek of the early stages...

I am thinking it may be a little big for her now...but that's okay, she's growing fast! Depending how I make out with the finished product and if I can get her to model the dress for me, I'll post some photos!
(Hmmmm...those cute Daisies could become an inspiration for some very COOL scarves!!).

Recently I have started up a doe Studio Facebook fan page. It's a great way to get your "friends" to see what you are up to, let all of your fans know what's new in the shop and a fantastic marketing tool. I learned about setting up a fan page in the forums of Etsy, where one Etsian shared how she noticed increased traffic AND sales in her shop as a result of the fan page.

GTD treatment update

A special thanks to everyone who has come by and read my story and supported my fundraising efforts.
My last treatment was on last a week ago Wednesday. I have been managing pretty well with only fatigue, loss of appetite and some thinning hair. After the last treatment, I noticed a red itchy welt on my arm just above the injection site. I checked in with my Primary nurse, and went down to have it looked at. The Dactinomycin (the chemo drug) had leaked out of my vein and burned my skin from the inside out. Crazy and scary at the same time. As a result of the leakage, I am scheduled to have a PICC line put in on Tuesday. A PICC line is a catheter that goes into a vein in your arm, with the tip resting in an artery close to your heart. This is a more effective way to deliver the chemo and can be used to collect blood samples as well (which I am still doing weekly). I am a bit scared about the PICC procedure but it's a small battle in the GTD war!
I am about 8 weeks into treatment and my nurse thinks that I may have up to 12 more weeks to go. Lets hope that the "magic juice" can do the trick and I can finish up sooner rather than later! We have been dealing with all of this since December and it's been a long 5 months. We are ready to move on and be done with it all. My Molar Pregnancy...from conception to chemo

I’ll begin this post by saying that it’s been a long time since I have blogged about ANYTHING! Normally I wouldn’t use this blog to tell more personal stories, but in an effort to raise awareness and do some fundraising, I’ll make an exception. This is my journey, thus far, with Gestational Trophoblastic Disease.
Since the birth of our son, in 2005 my husband and I have been trying for another child with no success and numerous and complicated losses (which I won’t go into here – they are just as complicated as the story I am about to tell you!). Finally after having trouble and considering fertility treatments, we got the news that we were pregnant literally days after we moved to a wonderful new home. We were going to have a baby!! We were over the moon, and still at the same time a little cautious due to our previous experiences. Due to my medical history we were sent for early ultrasounds – at 6 and 8 weeks along. Due to the holidays I didn’t hear from the doctor with my results until January 5th.
It was a phone call I’d never forget. She said that she had scheduled me for an appointment over at the hospital the next morning – she suspected that I had a Molar Pregnancy. Up until that moment, I had never heard of it and had no idea what on earth that meant. I went to the hospital to have some more tests done. Another ultrasound and bloodwork confirmed that I had a complete molar pregnancy. They found a large, rapidly expanding growth and my hormone levels were over 500,000 (so high that they had to do a manual count). The doctor explained that instead of a baby, essentially there was a grape like tumor in my expanding uterus. One sperm fertilizes an empty egg, and begins to replicate with only male genes – no female genes. The body thinks you are pregnant, you have all the symptoms, some of which are amplified due to the fast growing invasive tumor. I had a D&C that afternoon to remove the mole.
After weeks of recovery and weekly bloodwork to follow up on my progress my doctor referred me to the oncology department at Sunnybrook. The tumor was persistent. At this point the molar pregnancy is considered a rare but highly curable cancer called Gestational Trophoblastic Disease. I became part of a clinical study to test the effectiveness of a second surgery to remove the tumor instead of proceeding directly to the alternative – chemotherapy.
The next day (Feb 19th), I had my second D&C. Again, I was to complete weekly bloodwork to measure the bHcg hormones to see if my levels were declining, meaning that the tumor is shrinking. The following week, I received a call that my numbers were negative! Success. I was elated. I still needed to do weekly bloodwork for the next 6 months to make sure there was no regrowth. The following week, still negative!
I went to my follow up appointment with the oncologist one month after my 2nd surgery. He came in with some very shocking news – the lab (an external one, not the one at the hospital) had been performing the WRONG blood test – my negative results were false. I ran over to have more blood drawn at their lab and went home. The next day, I got a call from my wonderful clinical nurse, Violet. Another call that I will never forget – I had to go back down to Sunnybrook for further tests (including another ultrasound and chest xray – to make sure it hadn’t spread). My hormone levels had doubled since the last surgery. I was to start chemotherapy the very next day. I will require at least 8 weeks of treatment (or until my levels reach negative, with one preventative treatment after that). I have since found out that the reason the surgeries were unsucessful - the tumour has migrated from my uterus into the muscle of my abdomen. Treatment will remain the same, so far!
My cancer is 100% curable – thank God, but the journey will be tough. Walking through the halls of the chemotherapy clinic really puts EVERYTHING in perspective. I am one of the lucky ones, and I will not take that fact for granted. It has been a very long 4 months with a long road ahead of us but I know we'll get through it!

The hats have it!

Brrr....
It's November. It's November in Ontario. It's damp, chilly and down right depressing. But please....don't despair.
Look good. Stay warm. Be happy. How can I do all of this, you ask? One simple word: HATS.
Yes, the hats have it this time of year! Hat head is "in" (or bring a brush and hairspray along if you like). I am happy to announce the recent addition of hats to my shop shelves! Making them is addictive - no lie: I made one a day for a good week straight!! Currently I have three varieties available.

I love the Newsboy style - with brim, forehead band and two buttons on the temples.

These "Headhuggers" will keep you WARM and look fantastic!

And last, but certainly not least, to satisfy the public outcry from close friends - the beanie!

Sales (and views) are on the rise

Even if it's slowly but surely my Etsy sales are on the rise! And view are too! I'm not sure where they all came from but my views in the past couple of days have been staggering. I actually scrolled through all of the treasuries to see if I was featured. But alas, I couldn't find it! Maybe I was on the front page and just didn't see it in time! Did you happen see me on the front page?

I had another sale this morning...

Fiona - Wrap in Charcoal Grey. Made with a mohair/acrylic blend yarn.

She's very lovely - I really enjoyed making this piece. It's very soft, squeezable and warm. And because it's wide and long, it's very versatile. Wrap it, wear as a scarf or a cowl (hey you could even use it as a lap-ghan). Surprisingly, as soon as this sold, my views dropped immediately. That alone tells me something was up!

I miss her already! Maybe I'll have to make another one - not much planned this weekend except packing anyway! Why not!

Initially, I was drawn to this shop because of it's name! MuffinTops can have a double meaning (especially for all of us women out there who have a little "extra" around the middle)! Hilarious! Then I browsed her shop and was delighted to see such beautiful jewelery! And Sock Monkeys to boot! Who doesn't love Sock Monkeys!?

Q. How long have you been "crafting" in your art medium?
A. In my first life, I was a fine arts major specializing in drawing, painting and installation art. However, life moved in ways I didn't predict and I ended up with a masters in Art Therapy and working in non-profit mental health housing and support! I took up jewelry making after a small personal crisis and never looked back since! The sock monkeys were a project for an art group I was running with clients and I got addicted to making them.

Q. How long have you been a part of Etsy?:
A. I've been a part of Etsy for about a year and a half. My cousin had found this site and suggested that I start selling here!

Q. Tell me about yourself:
A. I've been told that I'm a multitasking whirlwind! I love creating, and finding new things to make - even though most of them don't end up seeing the light of day! I'm actually heading into my 14th week of my first pregnancy, so I'm looking forward to becoming a mamma for the first time too.

Q. What do you see yourself doing in 5 years (either as a part of Etsy or otherwise)?:
A. In five years, I would love to have my own little studio and be doing this full time. I still would love to be working in the mental health sector - at least part time! and maybe be a mom to more than this little one. If the husband and I could put our heads together to start our own business, that would be fantastic too!
Q What is your favorite item in your shop right now and why?

A. My favorite item is: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=14713134 while my silver collection isn't my best seller, I'm in love with the process and the shine of sterling! This one is a perfect contrast of texture! the disc can also be worn convex or concave - shielding you from negative energy... or absorbing good!

Must Love......Scarves!

Well, it's late October and here in Ontario, Canada the temperatures are dropping as quickly as the Canadian Dollar. (Oh Dear! Bad joke!!) So with the colder weather, one must prepare themselves by making amendments to their wardrobe. Yes, my friends, I speak of the scarf.
We all know that with winter comes the coat and most likely the hat and even sometimes, mittens. But not everyone has embraced the practicality, the functionality and the high fashion impact the scarf holds. In my eyes, everyone simply must love scarves.
Now having said I all of that, I feel that I must mention that I am, well, biased. You see, I love to make scarves and therefore have undying love and respect for all of them. I think everyone should have them. Long ones, fat ones, skinny ones, red ones. I don't discriminate! All scarves are of equal beauty and serve an equal purpose. A scarf can save your face, literally. Wrap your cheeks with a sumptuous, soft and lovely scarf this winter and watch the changes happen in your skin. By taking protective measures against the wind, you will be saved from the terrible dry flaky cheeks of years gone by. You'll look great and have great skin as a bonus!
Now let's take a look at some of your options. You'll be pleasantly surprised to see that you don't have to wear that same old thin tartan scarf from your youth (although you should hold on to it and put it into your rotation)! Today, with so many fabulous designers out there, you could wear a different scarf everyday of the season! Currently my favorite style is a long very soft wool scarf with the fringe running along the side instead of just adorning the ends. Talk about DRAMA (see photo at top of post)!! Even though I have been making these for over a year now, I'm still debating on what to call them "SideSwept" Scarves or "SideWinder" Scarves. Perhaps I will hold a poll on a future post.

Also piquing my interest in the scarf world of late are the Scarflette and Lariat Style Scarves. Both will change the look of your attire in an instant. The Scarlette works so well under your huge bulky coat, simply because it hugs your neck. No fuss, no muss! A Scarflette is similar to a cowl with the difference lying in only how they are put on. The scarflette is worked as an open ended piece that is fastened with either a broach, button or a tie of some sort. Thus far, I have enjoyed the many fantastic button options available. My next step with no doubt include the brilliant broaches out there!
Lariat style scarves are unique. Thin and versatile, they serve to act more as an accessory rather than a functional weather barrier (although some may surprise you and act as both!). I enjoy them immensely, just wrap (and wrap and wrap) and wait for the complements (yes, they will come!). Lately I have been combining up to 3 Lariat scarves at once to create a dimensional, dramatic piece that has many looks. Each piece and be worn separate of each other and can be worn in a number of ways. Wear it every day of the week, but never the same way twice - how cool is that!?

So I implore all of the doubters out there - give scarves a chance! You'll be happy you did! And look fabulous to boot! Browse my ridiculously fantastic scarf inventory here.

Etsy Pick of the week - bstudio

My sincere apologies! My "weekly" spotlight has turned into a biweekly spotlight this time around. Life has been crazy the past week and a bit. In the past 8 days we have sold our old truck, sold our HOUSE, my husband graduated trade school (with HONOURS no less!) and we have bought ourselves a new abode! Very exciting times!

So onto the spotlight. bstudio uses the needlecraft technique of silk ribbon embroidery to create unique and lovely pieces such as pillows, note cards and other fabulous accessories. Here's what she has to say about her art:

"I work primarily in silk ribbon and started out making embroidered pillows and ring pillows. I find that once I become comfortable and familiar with the techniques of a medium I like to experiment and explore. That has lead me to try my hand at greeting cards and my latest addition in my shop which is jewelry made with silk ribbon. I love the whole process of designing and creating all the items in my shop.When I first started crafting, I was working in needlepoint and discovered the work of Kaffe Fasset. I'm impressed with his way of using color and design that is so different from the traditional methods.

I’m also inspired by the work of glass artist Dale Chihuly, another artist who ‘thinks outside the box’ when it comes to the medium he works in. That's what I like to do too, take the medium and see what I can do with it, not what the instructions tell me to do with it.

My inspiration comes from many sources, some are easy to identify, like the flowers in my garden or the nature that surrounds me but others are more ephemeral and just seems to grow and develop like a seed. I love to look through design and craft magazines and books and even fashion mags just to get the essence of a style or an idea. I have an interior design background working mostly on office spaces. This gives my work a split personality, some of it will be decorative and some of it will be more stylized. It will depend on what my idea is and what the ribbon or fabric says to me."

A very good weekend

Here it is Tuesday and I have already dropped the ball on my "weekly" Etsy shop feature! I promise to have a new shop for you tomorrow!

I had a great weekend! I had ordered several items in the past couple of weeks and happily they all arrived on Friday! What fun I had opening such lovely treasures! (Some of which I cannot mention here as they are gifts!). But I can say that I absolutely adore my new apron from Boojiboo. I twirled around like a little girl for a good ten minutes! My husband, who knows I'm a little crazy, was just laughing and shaking his head! Now that I have such beautiful Kitchen attire, I must learn to cook and bake!!

Two Treasuries in three days!

Not to be a boastful Betty...but I was notified by a fellow Etsian, Wallisdesigns yesterday that she had featured me in her treasury about urban decay. Visit the Treasury before Saturday night to feast your eyes on this "Beautiful Decay".

That's my photo of my Mom's red garden shed door in the middle. I love this photograph, it really captures it's rustic quailities.

Even one better, after thanking her profusely, she let me know that she had chosen my photo first, and that's what had inspired the treasury. Wow! Words can't expressed how flattered I am! Yesterday, as I perused the forums on Etsy, I came across a fun thread.

jrdnart said "Be in my treasury". It was still a new thread so I hopped on board! She had a very unique treasury idea...here's a screen shot!

So the idea was, she asked all of us interested to change the first photo of the item we wanted to feature in her treasury, add a picture of ourselves to the listing and that way people have a chance to meet you! Brilliant! Thanks jrdnart for such a creative and interesting treasury!!!

Welcome to my new weekly spotlight on a talented Etsy Artisan! I will be featuring one seller every week (or so!). I invite you to take some time to visit the shops, browse around and enjoy their creations! I am so proud to be a member of such a talented community! So without any further ado...
This week in the spotlight is Lurearts. Pam McFadyen is a very talented clay artist who works out of Toronto, Ontario.
Here's what she has to say about her art...

"There is something special about things made of clay. Each piece is unique and imperfect, much like us. I began my career in art as a painter but have become enamored by all things ceramic. I purposefully aim to make each work unique so the personality of the piece is evident even when it is part of a set. I create functional art with high fire stoneware that is meant to be used. Once you fill your home with handmade things you will notice that you gravitate to your favourites like the green ceramic mug or the brown clay bowl.

I am constantly striving to perfect and experiment with the chemistry of my glazes but have become attached to pale greens and tans because they have a subtle complexity that keeps me finding beauty in the same piece no matter how many times I have seen it. The gentle colours also allow the form to take precedence so the piece must have strong line, shape and personality. My newest glazes are watery colors such as Midnight Sea and Waterlily green. All of my bowls, mugs and ramekins are thrown and trimmed on a wheel yet may have trace elements of hand altering to complement the design of the piece.

I enjoy using texture in my handbuilt works. I design and carve plates that I then use to impress a relief botanical texture into my slabs. The delicate textures allow the glazes to break and pool which creates stunning colours. I am inspired by the simplicity of Asian design and the complexity of Rococo embellishment. Aiming to create a balance between these two contrasting sensibilities keeps me creating new and interesting works."

Babies + Afghans = SWEET!

Is there anything more adorable in the world than a happy, smiley faced, chubby cheeked little cutie pie snuggled up with their blankie? You'd be hard pressed to find it! (Okay so a basket-full of kittens or puppies might be a close second!)

I have been making afghans for over 15 years now, and since having my own child, I have really found a great amount of satisfaction in making baby afghans. Pretty much anyone who knows me and has had a baby has been a recipient of an Auntie Dawn baby afghan. I have been very fortunate to have such a supportive family, most of whom have actually purchased many of my creations as gifts!

All of my blankets are worked as if I were making them for my own child - I put a lot of love into each and every stitch. Because I enjoy doing this so much, it is never a chore or there is never pressure to meet a deadline. Every blanket is a professionally finished product paying great care to attention to detail. I am always learning new techniques and trying to keep up with the trends. I am always scouring books, websites and blogs for new ideas and beautiful new patterns to try! I love keeping my hands (and mind) busy.

Recently I have been busy making a nice quantity of stock for my shop doe Studio, found on Etsy. I have taken over the nursery until *fingers crossed* we need it again, using it to store my yarn and finished goods! I also use it as a "photo studio", taking a lot of my listing photos with my son's favourite Rocking horse.

Not only are my blankets beautiful, they are functional as well. They serve to keep those cool breezes and winter winds from making your baby uncomfortable (and we all know how much fun an uncomfortable baby can be!). They serve to protect your baby from the elements (sun, wind, light snow and rain). They serve as a comfort to your child and become a "sweetie", and can even become family heirlooms. Fall is around the corner and I have been busy building my stock of ridiculously fantastic scarves and cowls. I am honestly having a hard time keeping my listings up to my creating!! My apologies for the photos also. I honestly haven't had the time to properly edit them! So as soon as I have some time I will go back and edit those recent listings!

Stash busters!

Need ideas to use up your huge growing pile of yarn? My favorite stash buster is the Scarf! There are so many ways to create fun and funky items that fit your style or help to fill in your "gift" gap. I love to make scarves as gifts for family and friends, and sometimes for no reason at all (except that I just can't stop crocheting!!). *FREAK* So here's how I tackle the huge pile of yarn to make the perfect scarf.
Take 2 or 3 different types and thicknesses of yarn. I generally take one acrylic, one novelty yarn and add in a third of what ever is kicking around. I like to make sure that the yarn colors compliment each other - but that is simply my taste and is not entirely necessary! Experiment and have fun. There is no wrong way to do it! Now that I have chosen my colors and yarns, I grab my great big Q sized hook and start my chain. I enjoy using the big hooks, your scarf will work up fast and it will be nice, loose and soft. Whether you work width wise or lengthwise is up to you, but at this point (while you are making your chain) you will need to decide. That's part of the fun, just shoot from the hip,baby! So once you have decided upon how you are going to work the scarf, now it's time to choose your stitch. Here are some simple stitch ideas to try:
Single crochet (sc) in each chain/stitch
Double crochet (dc) in each chain/stitch

Now once you have reached your desired size, finish off and weave in the ends. If you have enough yarn left, even if its just one of them, feel free to add a fringe. I have been know to use old VHS movies to wind my wool! Take your wool, wrap it around your template to achieve desired length and fullness of fringe(say 6 times or more if you like), snip one end, holding the other in a loop. Using your hook, pull loop through the end of your scarf. With the hook still in the loop, wrap strands around and pull through loop. Pull to tighten. Repeat to add as many little fringes as you like. Or maybe you like pom poms. Perhaps you like nothing at all. YOU are in total creative control here - do whatever suits your mood!
The most important thing to remember is to have fun, enjoy what you are doing and know that eventually your "stash" will hug somebody special.

And if you are finding that a scarf is a bit too much for you (or you just don't have enough yarn), try a java jacket, face cloth or dishcloth. This are all fun, functional and will slowly help use up that stash.

And besides, it make me feel slightly less guilty about bringing home a couple more bags of new yarn if I've created something constructive and beautiful with what I already have!!

Tips for listing on Etsy

Yes it's true, a whole month has gone by without one single blog...
Must make an modest effort to do this blogging thing more often!

Lots has been going on. I have been crocheting like a crazy woman (just ask the hubby!). I have so much stuff ready to list....now I need to do my thing! Need to take photos (no problem), write my descriptions and commit myself to sitting at the computer for a while!

Here are some tips (or at least a couple of ways that I try to make it easier for myself) for creating a new listing for your Etsy shop.

Photos: Your photos should be your number one priority (aside from creating your masterpiece of course!). Ultimately this is what's going to "sell" your product. Make sure you have good, clear photos. I like to "display" mine as much as possible, using props if you have them. Be sure to indicate in your listing that your props are not included. Ensure your lighting is good, either use a light box or nice, natural light. Check these out: Picasa is a great photo editing program and it's free! http://picasa.google.com/ Webresizer compresses your photos for easier uploading. http://www.webresizer.com/
Descriptions: It's easiest to compose your descriptions in a word processing program so you can work at your leisure and use the spell check feature. Alternately, send yourself an email. Compose as usual, include your description (doing a spell check) and attach your photos. In this email, you can also make notes to yourself about price, quantity and tags. Now you are good to go!

Following the directions for listing your item on Etsy is very straight forward. Don't be intimidated, and don't worry. The more you do it, the easier it gets! I have found that browsing or posting in the forums if you have a problem will usually get you a lighting fast resolution to your questions.

The little things....

Sigh....
I have just returned from an absolutely wonderful vacation. Spent a week with family on an island in the middle of Haliburton Lake, Ontario. Just beautiful! With so many of us around it was nice to get little breaks for myself...relaxing, meditating and of course, crocheting. Check out my shop in the next week or so to see my new listings! I had the chance to spend lots of quality time with my little guy. I also had the immense joy of watching him change from a toddler into a little boy over the course of the vacation. Such a big transformation, I am so proud of him. Coming home makes me wish that I could spend more time with him on a daily basis. It makes my heart ache. Perhaps one day!

Much to my surprise upon my return, I received an email from a fellow Etsy seller - bstudio. She had featured one of my pieces in her treasury about colour. I was very honoured and grateful!!

She featured my Lilac photograph, which just happens to be one of my faves!

I've been with Etsy for a couple of years now, but only in the past year have I really been dedicated to making this thing work! When someone likes your shop, they heart you!

........drumroll please..........

I sailed past the 50 mark with a whopping 54!!! Woot Woot!

I am thinking that when I return from vacation, I should mark the occasion with a sale. Or how about a promotion, the 100th person to Heart me will get a special something! Hey now, that's an idea - will ponder while I'm at the lake!

I am soooo happy that going "green" is so trendy these days! Mother Earth thanks all of you!
The Market Bag is a perfect item to help the "green" movement!! It can be used to gather your veggies and fresh bread from the local Farmers Market. You can take it to the grocery store, and filler up with your Cheerios and goat cheese. Go ahead and fill it with the kids beach toys and take it to the beach. Anyway, I think you get the idea! These babies are versitile!

Welcome to my new blog everyone!

I hope to use this awesome space to highlight, review and promote items from my shop and, of course, all things Etsy! And from time to time, you'll find tips, tricks and other fun things!!

Everytime I tell someone that I am selling on Etsy, they ask "What's that?" I just thought everyone knew about Etsy - even Martha has featured Etsy sellers on her show! (and how cool is that!?). I like to think of Etsy as the worlds largest Art Show & Craft Fair.

I have been a member of Etsy for almost 2 years. The first of which was spent mostly exploring and dreaming. I have only really started to list items and really get serious about my business. I love it and am having so much fun. I really enjoy the community that Etsy provides for all of us artisans!

In my shop, called doe Studio, you can find crocheted items, beautiful photography and accessories! I do this part time with aspirations to work at this full time! Oh to dream!! I , must admit that I am severely addicted to crochet. I have been working with the hook and fibre for many years, many more than I care to admit!! I'll elaborate on my wool addiction another time!
